What is a veneer?

Veneer is a thin, durable shell that bonds onto the front surface of the tooth using a tooth-like material to cover a variety of tooth imperfections, including broken teeth, chipped teeth, black teeth, yellow teeth, worn teeth, gapped teeth, misaligned teeth, as well as unpleasant teeth. Veneer restores an aesthetically pleasing smile, full of charm and confidence, to the smile's owner.

How many types of veneers and materials?

There are 2 most common types of veneers, classified by the material used to craft the piece of work as follows:

  1. Composite veneer
Composite veneer (Composite material) uses composite materials to craft the piece of veneer; composite is an aesthetically tooth-like material typically used by dental specialists to craft veneers. However, composite is less resistant to breakage than ceramic materials, has less ability to withstand color absorption from food and beverage stains, has fewer brightness properties, and has a shorter lifespan than ceramic materials.
  2. Porcelain veneer (Ceramic)
Porcelain veneer (Ceramic material) uses ceramic to craft the piece of veneer. Ceramics possess higher durability, are smoother, and brighter than composite materials, as well as having light-reflecting properties, can withstand color absorption from food, and beverages, and have a longer lifespan than composite materials.

  3. Fix discolored teeth to be whiter and brighter naturally, and conceals dull teeth such as yellow teeth, black teeth, and freckled teeth.
  4. Fix dull teeth and enhance the ability to withstand color absorption from food and beverages.
  5. Fix pale teeth in patients with medication-induced stains, who continue to use medicines for a period.

Veneers: Steps of making

Typically, the veneer treatment process with a digital dental lab takes 4 visits, depending on the individual's condition.

1st appointment: A personalized treatment plan with a dental specialist

  • Initial consultation with the dental specialist to address concerns, find out the purpose, and obtain personal requirements in making veneers:
  • The dental specialist diagnoses the oral condition, including teeth and gums, to ensure the patient has no dental health issues such as tooth decay or root canal inflammation.
  • Patients cooperate with the dental specialist in selecting the shape, size, and color of veneers that meet the requirements of the patient’s expectations.
  • The dentist scans the teeth with a digital imaging system using advanced CAD/CAM technology to visualize the result of a new smile ahead of time.
  • The dental specialist makes the impression of a temporary wax-up model of the veneers to try to fit in before crafting the actual veneers.

2nd appointment:  Crafting veneers

  • The dental specialist contour teeth by removing tooth enamel to make it easier to attach dental cement.
  • The dental specialist conveys personalized, detailed instructions to the clinical technicians at the digital laboratory to craft mock-up temporary veneers.
  • A set of temporary veneers is delivered to the patient to try to fit in.
  • During this process, the patient can adjust the shape, size, color, and shade of the veneer to his or her liking.

3rd appointment:  Fitting actual veneers

  • The dental specialist will deliver and bond the actual veneer to the patient's teeth at this visit, approximately 1-2 weeks after sending the digital scan to a laboratory, resulting in an aesthetically pleasing smile.

4th appointment: A follow-up appointment

  • The dental specialist will schedule follow-up appointments to ensure the veneer placement delivers the best possible result, the highest level of teeth comfort, and perfectly fits with your requirements.

Who is a candidate for veneers?

  • Those who have black teeth, dark teeth, yellow teeth, discolored teeth, or stains from coffee and tea make you lack confidence.
  • Those who have cracked teeth, chipped teeth, small teeth, short teeth, worn teeth, or rabbit teeth that need filling in the gap.
  • Those who have mildly misaligned teeth, crooked teeth, or slightly crowded teeth, malocclusion of upper and lower teeth requiring a smooth alignment.
  • Those who have a gummy smile that reveals too much gum requiring correction.
    •    Those with slightly spaced teeth need to close the gap to prevent food from becoming trapped between teeth, causing bad breath and tooth decay.
  • Those who wish to change their smile to enhance their personality, such as changing the shape of their square teeth to be more rounded.
  • Those who wish to have a star, influencer, or celebrity smile can bring a picture of the ideal smile to design and create smiles together with the dental specialist.

How many veneers should I get, and where are the best bonded?

Veneers create a new smile that looks better than ever, that’s why people prefer veneers to be bonded to the front of their teeth, both the upper and lower teeth that reveal the whole smile, such as the upper 6 teeth and the lower 6 teeth or the upper 8 teeth and the lower 8 teeth (pairing), depending on the individual teeth condition. It is advisable to consult with an experienced dentist who has expertise in diagnosing, analyzing dentition, and cooperating in designing a beautiful smile alignment that suits individual preferences.

Veneers: Where to have the treatment?

Digital dental lab with an international high standard

Digital dental lab is a pivotal factor in designing, creating, and crafting a piece of veneer that meets international standards and conforms to patient requirements. By utilizing an advanced digital CAD/CAM scanning system, patients can visualize a 3D simulation result of the transformative smile before making the actual veneer. The patient can participate in the design of the smile, including shape, size, and color, with the dental specialist to their satisfaction.

Consider getting veneer treatment at a dental practice that’s equipped with a digital dental lab, which also offers the most benefits in terms of speed, precision, and a high safety standard.

Dental specialist with experience and expertise

A skilled dental specialist with experience and expertise is one of the most important factors in successfully gaining a drastically beautiful smile that meets the patient’s requirements and provides the highest satisfaction. Hence, always consider an experienced dental specialist before deciding to do veneers.

Veneer: FDA-approved materials

Veneer material is also the main component to be considered before doing veneer. Veneer material should be selected from an FDA-approved high-quality medical-grade material—FDA (food and drug administration), with the highest safety standard accepted worldwide to ensure safety and to lower the chance of possible complications such as root canal inflammation, gingivitis, periodontal disease, sensitive teeth, or tooth decay, etc.

Veneers Aftercare

A daily oral hygiene routine best practice regularly to maintain the cleanliness of the oral cavity and healthy teeth condition is important for veneer aftercare as the following practices:

  1. After veneer treatment, patients may experience pain, sensitivity, or swelling of the gums; dentists usually prescribe a strong painkiller to relieve pain.
  2. Brush your teeth regularly to prevent the build-up of plaque, bacteria, and stains.
  3. Floss your teeth regularly after meals and rinse with a non-abrasive mouthwash to remove trapped food particles between the teeth, the cause of bad breath and tooth decay.
  4. Do not bite hard objects, hard-textured food, or ice with your teeth, or use your teeth as tools to keep the veneer from cracking or damaging.
  5. Individuals with habitual bruxism should wear a soft night guard at night to protect the veneer from cracking or damage while sleeping. Inform the dentist if you need a soft night guard after finishing the veneer treatment.
  6. It is recommended that the patient attend each follow-up appointment to check if there are symptoms involving the veneer after treatment, such as a toothache or tooth sensitivity.
