Hematology Center

A blood disorder is self-explanatory: a condition affecting the cells of the blood of the circulatory system, including red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, bone marrow, lymph nodes, and the immune system. Blood disorders are classifiable into two groups:

  • Noncancerous blood disorders: Examples are thalassemia, aplastic anemia, and hemodynamic disorders like thrombosis and bleeding disorders.
  • Cancerous blood disorders: Examples are acute and chronic leukemia and lymphoma. This type of blood disorder usually comes with symptoms like bruises (ecchymoses), nosebleeds (epistaxis), anemia, and lymph node swelling in the neck, groin, and armpit.

The Hematology Center at MedPark Hospital is poised to treat patients with every type of blood disorder. Every step is carefully thought-out for the patients, from consultation to diagnosis, treatment, and post-treatment self-care,

Specialties

Hematopoietic Stem cell Transplantation

The Hematology Center at MedPark Hospital is ready to offer hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, previously known as bone marrow transplant. This specialized treatment is considered an organ transplantation. Plus, it requires expertise from specialist doctors, nurses, and facilities like a positive-pressure cleanroom with HEPA filters.

Nowadays, one can collect hematopoietic stem cells from peripheral blood after injecting substances that stimulate hematopoietic stem cells to migrate out of the bone marrow to the blood. This technique allows convenient collection and reduces the risks compared to a traditional surgical harvest in the operating room, becoming a popular way of stem cell collection.

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is advantageous for treating cancerous and noncancerous blood disorders. For example, the procedure can cure acute leukemia and lymphoma and allow patients with multiple myeloma to live a prolonged life with better quality.

As mentioned above, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation can also cure certain noncancerous blood disorders, such as aplastic anemia, pediatric thalassemia, and congenital immunodeficiency.

Hematological malignancy

Hematological malignancies, unlike other cancers needing surgery, are primarily treated with medications. MedPark Hospital's Hematology Center and Light of Day Oncology Center offer advanced treatment for these conditions. Our skilled team specializes in targeted therapy, immunotherapy, antibodies, and cell-based immunotherapy.
