As we age, our immune system gradually weakens, increasing our susceptibility to infections that may have once been mild in our younger years but can now pose serious health risks. One such condition is shingles, caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which lies dormant in the nerve ganglia of individuals who have previously had chickenpox. When immunity wanes due to aging or underlying health conditions, the virus can reactivate. While the severity of shingles varies depending on individual health factors, it presents a significant risk to older adults.
Similarly, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) may cause only mild symptoms in healthy individuals, such as fever, cough, sneezing, and a runny nose, with low-grade to high fever. However, certain high-risk groups who are more prone to complications or pneumonia include premature infants, especially those born before 29 weeks of gestation, individuals with congenital heart disease, immunodeficiency, and lung disease. In those high-risk groups, the condition progresses rapidly, requiring a ventilator. Therefore, recognizing the risk and taking preventive measures is essential and highly worthwhile. Today, effective vaccines are available to protect against shingles and the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
The new-generation shingles vaccine, known as the Recombinant Subunit Zoster Vaccine (RZV), is a protein subunit vaccine that does not contain the live varicella-zoster virus. Instead, it utilizes glycoprotein E, a key viral protein, to stimulate a robust immune response, demonstrating 97% efficacy in preventing shingles in adults aged 50 and older and 91.2% efficacy in reducing postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), a debilitating nerve pain associated with shingles. Long-term follow-up over 10 years has shown that the vaccine maintains an 89% efficacy in preventing shingles.

Who should receive the Shingrix® vaccine?
- Adults 50 and older. A two-dose intramuscular series is administered in the upper arm, 2–6 months apart.
- Adults 18 and above who are at increased risk for shingles. These include those with compromised immune systems, individuals on corticosteroid therapy, and those undergoing radiation or chemotherapy, as these conditions weaken immunity and heighten the risk of shingles. The vaccination requires a two-dose series administered intramuscularly, 1 to 2 months apart.
- Individuals who have previously received the live-attenuated zoster vaccine (ZVL) can get Shingrix®, with a minimum interval of at least 2 months between the ZVL and Shingrix® doses.
- Individuals with a history of shingles can receive Shingrix® 6 months after the infection has resolved.
The RSV vaccine has demonstrated 94.6% efficacy in preventing lower respiratory tract infections in individuals with underlying health conditions and at higher risk of severe RSV infection.
Who should receive the RSV vaccine?
- Adults aged 50+ with comorbidities such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), coronary artery disease, heart failure, diabetes, or kidney disease are at greater risk after RSV exposure.
- Adults aged 50+ living in multi-generational households, particularly those with young children or elderly family members
