Eyelid Spa Treatment

Eyelids act as protective barriers, shielding the eyes from dirt and contaminants, and also contribute to a comfortable sleep by blocking light. When you blink or shut your eyes, the lacrimal glands produce tear film as a lubricant and antibacterial secretion, and the meibomian glands release fine oily droplets to moisten your eyes.

Why proper eyelid hygiene is important?

Given the amount of dirt, pollution, debris, and foreign matter accumulating on our eyelids and lashes daily, eyelid hygiene is essential. It is an effective preventive measure to safeguard you from various eye conditions.

What is the eyelid spa treatment?

The eyelid spa treatment addresses dry eye resulting from meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), leading to eyelid inflammation, dry eyes, pink eye (Conjunctivitis), irritation, or hordeolum. MGD-induced dry eye occurs due to reduced tear production from the main lacrimal gland and accessory lacrimal glands. Consequently, the tear film loses its stability and evaporates more rapidly, resulting in eye irritation and dryness. The eyelid spa treatment can alleviate obstruction in the meibomian glands by utilizing a warm compress, eyelid massage, and cleaning.

What is the eyelid spa treatment?

Eyelid spa treatment procedure

  1. Warm compress: Wear warm compress glasses for 10 minutes. It will release water vapors at 40 degrees Celsius to unblock the oil glands at the edge of the eyelid.
  2. Eyelid massage: Massage eyelids with a glass stick and cotton bud to empty oils from the glands.
  3. Eyelid cleansing: Clean your eyelids and eyelashes with an eye cleansing foam and balanced salt solution.
  4. Antibiotics and artificial tears: Administer antibiotics and artificial tears to moisten the eyes as the final step of the eyelid spa.

Benefits of eyelid spa treatment

  • Relieve dry eyes and eye discomfort.
  • Stimulate meibomian gland function.
  • Remove dirt and microorganisms around the eyelids.
  • Improve tear film and rejuvenate eye surface.
  • Reduce atrophy of the meibomian glands.

Limitations of eyelid spa treatment

  • Not suitable for people with keratitis, stye, conjunctivitis, or other eye infections, who should receive treatment before treatment.
  • It cannot treat dry eyes due to extended contact lens wear, prolonged computer or mobile phone glare, and medications, such as acne medications, depression medicine, blood pressure drugs, antihistamines, and hormonal fluctuations, leading to a decline in tear quality, particularly in women.

Eye conditions from poor eye hygiene

  • Dry eyes: Tear is a mixture of water, fatty oils, and mucus. Poor eyelid hygiene leading to inflammation around the eyelid corners may hinder oil gland secretion into the tears, contributing to dry eyes. Its symptoms include red and watery eyes, blurred vision, and sensitivity to light.
  • Blepharitis: Blepharitis is a bacterial infection affecting the eyelashes but can typically be manageable through diligent eyelid care and regular cleaning routines. Inflammation occurs from the accumulation of dandruff from the scalp and brows, eyelash mites, lice, and crusts along the eyelid, obstructing the oil glands at the base of the eyelashes. Blepharitis may result from rosacea, causing crusted or falling eyelashes, flaky skin around the eyes, frequent blinking, greasy or swollen eyelids, and red, watery eyes.
  • Hordeolum or Stye: Hordeolum is a painful, red, pimple-like, pus-filled lump that commonly emerges on the edge of the eyelid or the inner part. Additional signs and symptoms may involve tearing, swelling of the eyelids, and painful eyelids. Establishing a thorough cleansing routine is advisable to prevent or reduce the occurrence of a stye.
