Shoulder pain, or injury of the muscles and tendons around the shoulder joints, can affect everyone. Because the shoulder joint plays a crucial role in nearly every daily movement, it is particularly susceptible to strain and injury. Common causes of shoulder pain include:
- Trauma or a sudden forceful impact can lead to shoulder damage, tears, or dislocation.
- Improper shoulder movement can lead to tendon tears.
- Sports-related injuries from overexertion, improper exercise techniques, or inadequate muscle stretching before physical activity can strain and injure the shoulder muscles and tendons.
- Age-related degeneration of the shoulder muscles and tendons is common among older adults.
Mild shoulder pain can be resolved with a period of rest. However, in case of severe or persistent symptoms—such as frozen and stiff shoulders, significant pain, inability to fully raise the arm, and restricted shoulder movement—shoulder joint and rotator cuff repair surgery may be indicated.
